Bank and ATM Security
Bank and ATM security involves both personal vigilance and professional measures. Personal security includes being alert, shielding your PIN, and checking for suspicious devices like skimmers. Professional measures involve physical security like guards and cameras, as well as technical safeguards like software encryption and fraud monitoring to protect both customers and the physical machines.
For personal use at ATMs
- Be aware of your surroundings: Stay alert and look for suspicious activity or people loitering near the ATM.
- Inspect the machine: Before using it, check for any unusual or loose parts, especially around the card reader and keypad.
- Shield your PIN: Always cover the keypad with your other hand while entering your PIN to prevent it from being seen or recorded.
- Choose a secure location: Use ATMs in well-lit, busy areas, and avoid isolated or dark locations, especially at night.
- Don't accept help from strangers: If you need assistance, contact your bank directly. Avoid asking strangers for help at the ATM.
- Count cash in private: Once you have left the ATM, go to a secure location to count your cash.
- Monitor your accounts: Regularly check your bank statements for any unauthorized transactions and report any suspicious activity to your bank immediately.
